Deeply experienced diplomat and geopolitical expert to co-lead global team of senior geopolitical advisors.
Brunswick Group, the world’s leading critical issues advisory firm, today announced that Mitchell Reiss will join the firm as a Partner and Co-Lead of the Geopolitical practice group on July 1, 2022. He will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.
Mitchell brings extensive experience of geopolitical matters following a distinguished career in and out of public service. He was Director of the Office of Policy Planning in the State Department from 2003–05 and President George W. Bush’s Special Envoy for the Northern Ireland Peace Process from 2003–07, with the rank of Ambassador. He was a National Security Advisor to then-Governor Mitt Romney during his 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. He was selected as a White House Fellow and served as Special Assistant to National Security Advisors Colin L. Powell and Brent Scowcroft. More recently, Mitchell has served as President and CEO of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and President of Washington College.
At Brunswick, Mitchell will co-lead the firm’s Geopolitical practice group alongside Kate Fall, a Partner based in London. The practice group also comprises senior experts including Robert B. Zoellick, former President of the World Bank; Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the World Trade Organization; Charles Powell, former Private Secretary and Advisor on Foreign Affairs and Defence to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; George Yeo, former long-term Minister in the Singapore government; Adm. Michael S. Rogers, former Director of the NSA; Anthony Gardner, former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union; and Paddy McGuinness CMG OBE, former UK Deputy National Security Adviser.

About Mitchell Reiss
Most recently, Mitchell has served as the UK government’s Representative to the Independent Reporting Commission, focused on ending paramilitary activities in Northern Ireland. During this time, he was also a Distinguished Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Previously, he served as President and CEO of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and President of Washington College.

Mitchell began his career as an attorney practicing banking and corporate law at Covington & Burling.
Mitchell has authored three books and contributed to 17 volumes on international and regional security issues. He has testified numerous times before the Senate and House of Representatives on U.S. foreign policy. He has spent much of his public service career negotiating sensitive and complex diplomatic issues. He holds a D. Phil. from Oxford University, a J.D. from Columbia Law School, a Master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, and a B.A. from Williams College.
