The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism: What to expect on July 14 and next steps

Wednesday, 30th June 2021

08:30 - 09:30 BST / 09:30 - 10:30 CET

This July, the European Commission is set to unveil its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (“CBAM”), a first-of-a-kind measure, which will apply carbon pricing to imports of carbon-intensive goods into the European Union. This has the potential to create significant implications for international trade flows and may provide a template for similar mechanisms to be applied in other geographies.

Join us for a discussion where we will hear from experts in disciplines covering international trade, carbon economics and heavy industry to find out:

  • How might the mechanism work in practice?
  • What are the potential implications for specific sectors and trade flows?
  • How will the mechanism comply with WTO regulations, and what are the potential geopolitical implications?
  • How are companies preparing for the CBAM?
  • How will the process likely unfold over the coming months and what are the opportunities for engagement?

Featured on the panel will be:

  • Pascal Lamy, Senior Advisor, Brunswick Group; Former Director-General of the WTO
  • Robert Jan Jeekel, Head of European Union Institutional Affairs, ArcelorMittal
  • Antoine Vagneur-Jones, Energy Transitions Associate, BloombergNEF

The discussion will be chaired and moderated by Brunswick Partner Fiona Wright.
