Growing Green: How can businesses recover sustainably under the European Green Deal?

In February, co-legislators in the European Parliament and the Council of the EU finalised and adopted the necessary acts to establish the Recovery and Resilience Facility. Its €672.5 billion financial envelope makes the facility the centrepiece of the Next Generation EU recovery instrument. All eyes are now on the 27 capitals where national governments are expected to finalise their country’s recovery and resilience plans by the end of April. Importantly, at least 37% of each plan’s allocation must support Europe’s green transition.

As the EU is mulling over its post-pandemic recovery, we ask politicians, elected officials, decision-makers, business leaders, and civil society representatives to join us for a timely discussion on how the economic and environmental ambitions of the EU’s recovery plan can be best aligned. In this webinar, we set out to explore the conditions for Europe's green investment plan to deliver the necessary economic stimulus and build resilience to future shocks.

The second edition of our webinar series will be again hosted and moderated by Geneviève Pons, Director General of Europe at Jacques Delors in Brussels, and Pascal Lamy, President emeritus of the Jacques Delors Institute and Chair of Europe at Brunswick Group.

 

Francesco Starace has been Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Enel S.p.A. since May 2014

From 2008 to 2014, he served as Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Enel Green Power, the Group's renewable power generation company and a leading player in the global renewables industry.

Among his several international position covered, he joined in 2015 the Board of Directors of the United Nations’ Global Compact and have been from January 2016 until January 2018, the co-chair of the World Economic Forum's Energy Utilities and Energy Technologies Community. In September 2017, the European Commission made him a member of the “Multi-stakeholder Platform on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the EU” and in October 2020 he was appointed Chair of the United Nations' Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Administrative Board.
Most recently, in December 2020 he was appointed Chair of the B20 Italy 2021 ‘Energy & Resource Efficiency’ Task Force, the aim of which is to make practical and actionable policy recommendations for sustainable progress and in January 2021 he was appointed Co-chair of the Clean Hydrogen Alliance’s roundtable on “hydrogen production” promoted by the European Commission.

A graduate in Nuclear Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan, he is married and has two sons. He is a keen cyclist, a supporter of the A.S. Roma football club, and has a passion for poetry.

Pascal Canfin MEP has been Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety since July 2019.

He was elected to the European Parliament in 2009 and May 2019. Prior to his current position, he was director general at WWF France for three years (2016 to 2019), contributing to the safeguard of ecosystems and the fight against climate change. From 2014 to 2015, he was senior advisor for climate at the World Resources Institute (WRI) and co-chaired the Commission for Innovative Financing for Climate. In 2012, French President Hollande appointed him as delegated minister (“ministre délégué”) for development at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before his first round as an MEP from 2009 to 2012 he worked as journalist for the monthly magazine Alternatives économiques (2003 to 2009). Prior to that he was an HR consultant (1999 to 2003) and a representative of the French Democratic Confederation of Labour (CFDT) trade union for Nord-Pas-de-Calais (1997 to 1999).

He graduated in Political Science from the Bordeaux Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) and from the Newcastle University.
