One of China’s most important annual political gatherings, the Two Sessions, convened this year in an atmosphere of guarded optimism about the direction of national economic recovery, with the leadership recognizing the domestic and international challenges ahead.
The Two Sessions approved China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), providing a blueprint for modernizing the economy that focuses on boosting domestic markets and leadership in next-generation emerging technologies, with an eye towards broadening the country’s global influence.
Though China has been successful in containing Covid-19 and life has returned to a high degree of normality domestically since last summer, the challenges in continuing to pursue growth while transitioning to a new economic model remain vast.
