Over the past year, the pandemic forced leaders to adapt in order to operate and engage with employees, customers, and investors, completely online.

Brunswick’s 2021 Digital Investor Survey shows that investors want and expect to hear from CEOs via digital and social media sources. In fact, 48% said that they use digital platforms to hear from the CEO and C-suite executives – a 10-point increase from 2019 – making a leader’s presence on social media essential. Brunswick’s Digital Investor Survey has been tracking the digital behavior of buy-side investors & sell-side analysts around the world for a decade. Read more of this year’s findings here.

As institutional investors are increasingly using online sources and tools to make investment decisions, this survey makes clear that the market is actively being shaped by digital. Here are the 5 key findings:

1. Remote working drove digital acceleration, with YouTube use and newsletter subscriptions up dramatically.

2. Company investor relations pages are investors’ most used and most trusted source of information.

3. Excitement about Reddit, r/WallStreetBets, and GameStop drove curiosity and caused many investors to reflect on the future.

4. Investors are anxious for alternative sources of information and exploring eagerly.

5. Leadership presence on digital and social media is essential.

Connected Leaders span countries, sectors, and backgrounds—and make an impact by being active, visual, engaging, and authentic. This month, we're exploring executive video series.

An ongoing video series enables Connected Leaders to be seen and heard, explore themes closest to them, and produce engaging and memorable content. Here are four CEOs with video series we’re following this month:

Kristin Peck
CEO, Zoetis

Peck recently launched her monthly video series, “On Purpose,” where she interviews Zoetis leaders and industry influencers about their sense of purpose and how it impacts their lives and work. Her first two episodes feature Zoetis colleagues and highlight her deep appreciation for Zoetis’ people and culture.

Herbert Diess
Chairman of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Group

Diess consistently keeps stakeholders updated on Volkswagen’s ESG and CSR initiatives in engaging ways, including his signature video series, “Diess Talk,” where he interviews experts within VW about innovation, technology, and electric vehicles (occasionally even test driving them!).

Dan Schulman
President & CEO, PayPal

Schulman often uses his platform to highlight the innovative work at PayPal and drive discussions about business and society. However, he takes a backseat in his signature video series, “Never Stand Still,” by asking the world’s leaders about their career paths, leadership styles, and thoughts on current events.

John Furner
President & CEO, Walmart U.S.

Furner’s signature video series, “The Huddle,” celebrates Walmart employees at every level, giving customers a behind-the-scenes look at Walmart’s culture. His approachable and humorous personality shines in every episode, allowing employees and other stakeholders to relate to him.
