The first round of the Presidential election, towards social democracy “à la française”.
The representatives of the two main traditional parties, François Fillon, (right wing, Les Républicains, c. 19.5% of the vote) and Benoit Hamon (left wing, Parti Socialiste, c.7% of the vote) have both been eliminated, a first in the French Presidential election. The far-left party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon has scored a record 19% of the vote, bringing the populist voice of the extremes to record heights.
What next? François Fillon and Benoit Hamon have already called to vote for Emmanuel Macron, who is most likely to win the French Presidential election in two weeks.
