China's 2018 Two Sessions in review

A review of China’s latest political gathering and what it means for businesses engaging with China.

The significance of this year’s annual government gathering will have a profound impact on China’s future and the world’s engagement with China. President Xi Jinping is now no longer restricted to serving two terms and should be expected to be in office for a third five-year term (starting in 2023) and potentially for life. At only 64, he could be in office for many years to come.

But to focus on Xi’s consolidation of power and the removal of the term limit misses the real significance of this year’s meeting.

Xi Jinping executed what is arguably the single biggest reorganization of the government structure since the reform era began 40 years ago. The extent of changes mean that most companies will find government stakeholders will have changed.
